So I think I'm the first person to add a comment into your new blog. I agree that this will be a better way to get out your newsletter - too much hassle with all those email addresses. Looking forward to talking with you tomorrow.
I still have a bunch of pictures to put up, but they are getting sent to me. I will send you an email when they are ready!
Wowetta Hike
This is the wagon attached to a tractor that took us from the school to Wowetta.
Wowetta Hike
This is Shemila. She is another one of my favorites. Her and Veraline and Claudia used to come over a lot and were my "Three Buttercups." It was very hard to say goodbye to these three :(
Wowetta Hike
This is Collin, Dale, and Ernie. Dale was one of my tougher students at first, but in the end we got to be good pals. He is a very smart guy, but likes to goof off, which I guess is typical for boys his age.
Wowetta Hike
Kelly has found a unique umbrella!
Wowetta Hike
Wendy and Veraline being silly as we wait out the rain.
Wowetta Hike
Mary, Veraline, and me.
Wowetta Hike
This is the second weekend. Some of these lucky students were able to go both weekends. This is the weekend we got to see the brightly colored male cock-of-the-rock.
Wowetta hike
This is Mary Allicock, one of my best form 4 students. She was always so helpful to me, and I came to depend on her as my little helper. I expect great things out of Mary, and I will miss her a ton!
Wowetta hike
This is Shaunetter and I. She was one of my favorite students because she was always smiling and laughing. Here we are waiting to continue our hike while the rain passes.
Rupununi Sky
I told you the sky often put on a show for us. This was just before a storm.
Meet Claude
Claude, which is short for Claudia, is trying to reach a mosquito bite on her leg...This is my good friend Alma's daughter...she is a cutie isn't she?
Alma and Claude
These were my two favorite people that I met in Guyana. We are in Surama at Alma's house for the weekend. I am going to miss these two to no end :(
Claude
This is Claude in front of her house in Surama. I know, she is the cutest little thing in the world!
Graduation
This is Joseph Zammett. He was one of my best students, and he was top in some of his other subjects too, hence the trophies. I expect great things from this boy.
Graduation
This is me and my form 5 students at graduation.
Graduation
My precious form 5 boys!
Sean getting weedwacked
Sean made a bet that if his team won, he would shave his head. It looked really nice Sean...
Ah, just another rainbow
This is my backyard. And this was one of the many beautiful rainbows we got to see, pretty much on a daily basis.
Sunrise
This is also from my backyard. It's probably about 5-5:30 a.m.
Leaving at Christmas on the plane
We are at the Rock View airstrip, and Jess and I are on the plane. This picture makes me sad because this was the same scene when we left for good :(
Walking the road in Lethem
This is Sean and Jess and thier beautiful backsides. we are walking into town from the school in Lethem. This road was scary on dark nights because it is not very wide, and therefore easy to misjudge your step, which could send you rolling down it's steep side into a ravine.
Tulip
This is my sweet little dog Tuip. This skinny little mamma gave birth to 9 puppies 3 days before I left. I forgot to say goodbye...and now I have a massive amount of guilt over it.
From the plane
This is just after taking off out of Annai.
Our kitchen
This is inside our house...this is the kitchen, which got redone shortly after this picture.
Caterpillar
Don't touch because it stings!
Brazil...
Just so I could remember as the night went on...
Nice baby...
This is Kirsty, Grace, and Jess at a nine day party. After 9 days of life it is customary to have a celebration.
Sunset
Oh how I love sepia.
At the Lethem house
This was a savannah fire that got dangerously close to the house.
Putting out the fire
This was the same fire that got dangerously close to the house in Lethem. They were trying for a while to put it out. This is before it got really close to the house.
Big, colorful lizard
This was a pretty big one...
Agouti eating mango
Agoutis are found in the forest and are often hunted as bushmeat. I never got to eat one, but I loved feeding the ones they had at Rock View.
On the way to Lethem
This is the beauty of the Rupununi...the sky put on a show every single day.
Burning Savannahs
I love this picture...it almost looks underwater. This is the savannah after a fire, which are common during the dry season.
Beautiful Rupununi
This is the amazing skyline I got to see everyday. This is the savannah right behind the school.
Kumu Falls
This is truly in the bush...it was a hell of a drive through it...I can't believe the minibus didn't tip!
Stuck in the mud
Still on the way to Kumu falls...everyone get out and push!
Hiking to Kumu Falls
We were hiking up to Kumu Falls, which is a set of waterfalls up the Kunuku mountains. It was a great day, and we cooked some food on the ends of palm fronds.
One People, One love
Rastaman
A view from the top
This was flying into Guyana
Guyanese Currency
This is equal to about US$13.50
My first venture into the jungle
This is the canopy...isn't it cool?
My roommate Alexcia at orientation
This is a five star hotel! "This is what I do Heather, I sit."
In the Rupununi...Region #9
This is the savannah. Sometimes you think you are in Africa. These birds are Egrets, and they are common and beautiful.
Kumu Falls
Kumu Falls is in the Kanuku mountains, which are right in Lethem and seperate the North and South Rupununi. We went here one day when we were in Lethem. You have to go far into the bush and then hike in. It was so beautiful, and from here you could hike up to almost the start of the waterfalls.
In the Rupununi...Region #9
This is the way home..this red and rocky dirt road is the only road that goes from Region 9, where I live, to Georgetown. I live just in those mountains. This picture is me turning around to show you where we were coming from. We are headed the other way towards Lethem.
The Rupununi...Region #9
Crossing bridges in the savannah can be a bit nerveracking...
In the Rupununi...Region #9
This is either a baby black caimen or a speckled caimen. We saw this on top of the supply truck that was taking us to Lethem. Sitting on top of them is like getting a free eco-tour.
The Rupununi...Region #9
This is me on top of the supply truck driving through the savannah.
In the Rupununi....Region #9
That is a full moon behind me. We live by the moonlight...walking through the savannah at night when it is a full moon is one of the most amazing sights because the whole savannah (there are parts that have white sand) gets lit up.
Our first trip to Lethem.
Jess and I fled Annai after being left alone at the school compound for a few days. We were a bit freaked out, so we waited for a ride and ended up on a caravan of 3 huge supply trucks.
My house
This is our house. We have the end part. We live here with bats, donkeys, roaches, and our most recent addition, huge locusts...We have made it home now though.
My backyard
What a great view, huh? We see rainbows all the time.
Our dishwasher...
And this is the deluxe version. Once the water gets nasty enough you flush the toliet with it.
The Students...
We had 4 girls over for dinner...There were 2 birthdays and the other 2 helped Jess and me do our wash for the first time. Judy is holding the guava juice we made and Claudia is cutting the bora.
The Students
Morning Assembly...
The Students....
This is sports day. Day or month, I don't know what to call it. Sports took over our school days for a long period of time, a bit too long. But it was fun. This is Eagle house, which is my house, and not to mention the Champions of Interhouse Sports 2006!!
The Students...
Go Eagles!!!
The Students...
This is Jose Zammett doing the lime and spoon race, also a member of Eagle house.
The students...
Interhouse sports. This is Velisa doing the long jump...she was good and ended up winning first for her age group. Oh yeah, she was in Eagle House!!
The students...
This is Bruno. He is one of my third form biology students.
The students...
This is Jennifer Peters...her and her family live in a village called Aranaputa, which is about 6 miles away from the school compound. The village is beautiful, it is located in the basin, and Jennifer and her family grow, harvest, and sell peanuts. We got to meet her grandfather this day as well. He is a 78 year old man with a lot of knowledge about what the area used to be like and what it is becoming.
Annai Secondary School compound
This is standing on Bryan's back stoop. The entrance is just on the road there, and this is the way we walk down to the well in the mornings.
Cooking breakfast
Meet Kirsty and Grace, the two Project Trust volunteers from Scotland. They never eat anything except "CHIPATEES!" which consist of fried flour and water. Yum.
Our first trip to Brazil
Who says drag queens aren't fun? This is Kirsty dancing with a drag queen that persuaded us to come to her "house." It was cool because she spoke Portuguese and we spoke English, but we managed to have fun and communicate through broken Spanish.
Our first trip to Brazil
This is Jess, me, and Sean drinking handcrafted caipirhinas, which are Brazil's national drink...and man are they good! Obrigada!
Functions of the Essequibo River
Not only does it function as a habitat for wildlife, a water source, a mode of transportation, a car wash, and a swimming hole, but it also apparently is the local laundry mat.
Beautiful Butterfly
It blends so nice...
Caterpillar
This is a cool caterpillar that we suddenly realized was on Daniel's leg. Apparently they are poisonous.
The Bartica Mccaw
I wanted to hang out with him all day....Luckily I get to see and hear them a lot where I am at, they have a distinct call and they always fly with at least one other bird.
Woah Beetle!!
I wanted to go home in the very first seconds of seeing this beetle. Then I wanted to stay to see what else I could find...
Cool Grasshopper
And this is only the beginning...
Losing the battle of the paper boats in Bartica
We had a lot of time on our hands....Sean must have lost but Vince is still in the race!
Slow Ferry to Bartica
man oh man was this a hell of a day...
Pick me up from the ferry!
As the ferry passed by people on boats would come out on the water to pick up their loved ones and bring them back to the village.
Tropical Rain
This was our first heavy rain we got to see there. We were on the ferry.
